IMBA Student Wins Robin Emery Memorial Scholarship

Canfield_JoshJoshua Canfield, a second-year International MBA (IMBA) Spanish Track student and Peace Corps Fellow, is the 2007 recipient of the Robin Emery Memorial Business Scholarship. Canfield submitted his winning essay while on internship with Omtrix in San Jose, Costa Rica.  This year's essay topic was "The Role of Economic Development in the Struggle against Poverty."  In his essay, Canfield argues that microfinance is the most effective economic development tool available today because it helps finance peoples’ entrepreneurial dreams and has the potential to lift them and their communities from the cycle of poverty.  (Read winning essay)

The $500 memorial scholarship was created by classmates of Robin Emery, a former IMBA student who died prior to completing her degree, who would have graduated in 2004. To honor Emery's interest in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and economic development in the poorer countries, the scholarship was created to assist IMBA students who pursue internships with NGOs.  Unlike other internships, NGO internships usually offer little or no stipend.  (Read memorial essay by classmates.)

Three IMBA students received honorable mention recognition for their essays: Jeff Frame who interned with Mi Banco in Lima, Peru, and Jacalyn Jenssen and Kate White who both interned with C.A.R.E. Bolivia in La Paz.

The scholarship, awarded annually in August, is open to all IMBA students engaged in an internship in economic development and who are in good academic standing. Eligible students compete for the award by completing a 500-word essay.
