Five Professional MBA (PMBA) students and 13 undergraduates learned about “Business in Africa” this
summer in a new course taught primarily “on the road” in South Africa, Mozambique, and Swaziland.
The course, taught by Dr. Robert J. Rolfe, professor of international business, featured
lectures and visits to factories, “spaza” shops, diamond mines, various companies, and the
Johannesburg stock exchange.
“This was much more than a ‘photo op’ of elephants,” said Rolfe, an expert on Africa. “The
students saw what the tourists see, but they also learned the history, culture, and politics of the
area.”
Rolfe taught a similar course in Kenya in the summer of 2006. This is the first time the
course was taught in South Africa, Mozambique, and Swaziland.
