The Moore School’s European Track dual degree program (formerly called the Vienna Program), launched 15 years ago, will no longer be offered, Dean Joel A. Smith III announced April 25.
In a letter to alumni, students, and friends, Smith said the decision was made jointly by officials at Moore and the Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien (WU) because of “significantly” declining enrollments over the past five years. Reasons for the decline, Smith said, included “the proliferation of MBA programs throughout Europe and Asia, and the growth of ‘executive’ weekend and distance-learning format programs targeting students with a 5+ years of work experience.”
Another reason for the declining numbers, Smith said, is the Bologna Accord, “a sweeping European Union educational reform planned for full implementation by 2010” that has resulted in “ many more master’s-level business programs…being offered throughout Europe at heavily subsidized prices.”
Students enrolled in the dual degree, 15-month program had attended classes on USC’s Columbia campus and also at WU in Vienna, Austria.
Smith said that he is currently discussing “new partnership opportunities” with colleagues at
WU. The Moore School, he said, is “committed to enhancing our network of European business
schools at which students study French, German, Italian, and Spanish, as well as those where they
can take elective courses on exchange (such as the WU). We are also actively pursuing new
collaborations in Asia and Latin America.”
