South Carolina officially opened a trade office in Shanghai October 19, and Professor Chuck Kwok of the Moore School thinks the move is indicative of a
growing trend of Chinese investment in the United States. Kwok shared his views in a segment of the national public radio program, “Marketplace,” which aired
October 18.
States such as South Carolina are reeling from lost manufacturing jobs, which many blame on China’s exports of lower-cost textiles and clothing in recent years. But Kwok said one area in which China lags is research and development. “If you are not very strong in R&D, there’s no way you can dominate in the key industries like high-tech, like cars – you just don’t have that base. And that’s why China’s companies are going outside to America.”
The program highlighted the Chinese-owned Haier plant, which employs 200 in Camden, S.C., and produces refrigerators sold in such stores as Home Depot. The piece also featured an interview with S.C. Governor Mark Sanford.
