Dr. Helen I. Doerpinghaus, professor of insurance, has been
named Associate Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies at the University of South Carolina,
effective July 1. She will continue to teach half-time at the Moore School of Business.
In her new position, Doerpinghaus will be responsible for the undergraduate academic program at USC. The position is now held by Dr. Karl Heider, who is returning to the Anthropology Department in late June.
“I am very happy about the opportunity to take on some administrative responsibility,” Doerpinghaus said. “My undergraduate degree [from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota] was in History and English, and so I’m also excited about the chance to use my liberal arts background as well as my professional school experience to strengthen the undergrad experience at Carolina.”
Doerpinghaus came to the Moore School in 1993 after earning her Ph.D. at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Her primary areas of interest are insurance, employee benefits, and health care.
Doerpinghaus has won numerous teaching awards, including the Moore School’s Alfred G. Smith, Jr. Teaching Award, USC’s Michael J. Mungo Teaching Award, and the USC Mortar Board Excellence in Teaching Award.
She is past president of the American Risk and Insurance Association and the Southern Risk and Insurance Association, and is Education Chair of the Palmetto Chapter of the Risk and Insurance Management Society.
