Dr. Bill Bearden Receives First-Ever Journal of Consumer Research Award

Dr. William O. Bearden

For the first time in its 32-year history, the prestigious Journal of Consumer Research has presented a Distinguished Service Award – and the recipient is Dr. William O. Bearden, professor of marketing at the Moore School.

The award, presented Sept. 29 at the Association for Consumer Research Conference in Orlando, Florida, is “akin to something like a Lifetime Achievement Award for a particular group or industry,” said John Deighton, the journal’s editor.  Bearden’s service to the journal “ has been more than remarkable,” said Deighton.  “He has published frequently, served as an associate editor, and is one of our very best reviewers.”  In addition, he was “advisor and mentor to many of our current authors and reviewers.”

This is a new award, Deighton said, and Bearden was “the inspiration” for it.  He has served on the journal’s Editorial Review Board since 1991 and was associate editor of the publication from 1999 to 2002.  Founded in 1974, the Journal of Consumer Research publishes scholarly research that describes and explains consumer behavior.

Bearden earned his Ph.D. in marketing from the University of South Carolina in 1975.  He joined the USC faculty in 1978.
