Moore School Presence at Chinese Trade Forum

Representatives of the Moore School participated in the China-South Carolina Trade & Investment Forum held April 10 in Columbia. The forum was attended by a delegation of twenty-five Chinese officials looking to reinforce and increase economic exchange between South Carolina and China. Dozens of South Carolina government and business leaders were also in attendance.

Coinciding with the forum, the delegation’s top official, Vice Premier Wu Yi, announced a major expansion at the Haier manufacturer plant in Camden, South Carolina, which will create 1,000 new jobs. Haier is China’s largest and the world’s fourth-largest manufacturer of white goods. The Camden plant, built in 1999, was China’s first and remains one of its largest foreign manufacturing investments.

Commenting at the trade forum on the growing economic exchange between South Carolina and China, Secretary of Commerce and Moore School alumnus Joe E. Taylor, Jr., noted that South Carolina ranks 20th among the states in exports to China, and that from 2000-2005 the state’s exports to China tripled.

Honored guest speaker Zhang Xiaoqiang, vice-minister, National Development & Reform Commission of the State Council, People’s Republic of China, said the event would hopefully promote “better understanding and greater exchange with South Carolina.”

Dean Joel Smith attended the event along with David Hudgens, associate director of IMBA, and Scott Kaplan, associate director of graduate admissions.

The forum was sponsored by the S.C. Department of Commerce, which opened a trade office in Shanghai in October 2005.
