Increasing financial support lauded at Dean's Circle luncheon

Members of the Dean's Circle at the Moore School of Business have contributed more than $1.3 million over the past decade to support students, faculty, facilities, and programs, attendees at the Third Annual Dean's Circle Luncheon on Oct. 27 learned.

"We are grateful to our generous and loyal supporters," John C. Troutman, chairman of the board of the Dean's Circle, told about 75 members and Moore School friends who attended the luncheon, held at the Summit Club in Columbia. During the event, Troutman announced a new summa cum laude member of the Dean's Circle: R. Keith Elliott, retired chairman of the board of Avalon, New Jersey-based Hercules, Inc., who committed $10,000.

The Dean's Circle is composed of business executives, school administrators, and faculty and staff who make an unrestricted contribution of $1,000 annually to the Moore School to support its most vital needs.

As the group's 10-year anniversary approaches, membership in the Dean's Circle has increased from 91 at its founding in 1997 to 168 today. Dean's Circle revenue jumped from $68,619 in 1997 to $253,443 for the 2005-2006 school year.

Eric Hyman, athletics director at the University of South Carolina, was the keynote speaker for the luncheon. USC President Andrew Sorensen and Moore School Dean Joel A. Smith III also spoke.

Hyman told the luncheon guests there are currently 483 student athletes at USC. The athletics department has a program to help its student athletes prepare for job hunting, Hyman said. He also said that USC athletes must attend all classes or suffer decreases in the amount of playing time they are allowed to have at their games.
