Biography

Don Balch is a full-time lecturer in the Economics program at the Moore School of Business and undergraduate advisor for Economics students for the College of Liberal Arts.  He holds an MA in Economics from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina, a BS degree in Economics from LaSalle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and an AT degree in Electronic Technology from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  He worked for eighteen years in various electronic firms as a technical writer and as system’s analyst.  For the first 10 years of his employment with the University of South Carolina, Mr. Balch was the Operation’s Manager for the James C. Self Computer Center at the Moore School of Business.  He currently teaches three courses during the Spring and Fall Semesters of academic year, and two courses during the Summer sessions at the University of South Carolina Moore School of Business.  In addition, he serves on the undergraduate curriculum committee for Liberal Arts majors in the Economics discipline. 

 

Mr. Balch's research interests include the role of MS PowerPoint and other computer generated presentation packages in teaching economics; and the role that manually and computer-generated graphics play in the ability of students to learn and retain mathematical and economic concepts.   In addition, he has worked with Dr. Douglas Woodward, Director of the Division of Research, on several empirical research projects, and has worked with various Economics faculty on published refereed journal articles.  

Mr. Balch has prepared several MS PowerPoint packages to accompany Principles of Economics texts and a text in Engineering Economics
