The University of South Carolina CIBER supports the Moore School of Business in offering Business Language instruction in numerous languages to students and faculty in a variety of curricula and programs. Of special note: During the CIBER Grant Cycle from October 2006 - September 2010, the U.S. Department of Education (the source of the CIBER grant) is placing major emphasis upon instruction and competence in Less Commonly Taught Language (LCTLs), which are defined as languages other that English, French and Spanish. The SC CIBER and the Moore School of Business support the study of many business languages, the majority of which are LCTLs.

Business Language Programs and Activities

International MBA (IMBA) Language Tracks
Students selecting the IMBA Language Track combine their business education with intensive language training in one of eight languages – Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, or Spanish. In addition to language training, students will have an internship in a country that speaks the language they have studied. All language tracks are 20-22 months, with the exception of Chinese and Japanese, which require 29-34 months of study to give students added exposure to the more complex languages and cultures of these countries. After their internships are completed, students in both the language and global tracks return to the Moore School of Business in Columbia, South Carolina, to continue their business education. This second year of the program is designed for the students to obtain depth in their areas of interest. Students take elective classes during their final two semesters either at USC or they may choose to complete a one-semester exchange at one of our partner institutions. All students have the opportunity to have a concentration in a designated area.

Undergraduate International Business Major
Undergraduate students who select the Undergraduate International Business Major (consistently ranked as #1 by U.S. News and World Report) are required to complete four advanced courses (300 level or above) in one of the following languages: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish. The University of South Carolina CIBER and the Moore School of Business are also members of the Consortium of Undergraduate International Business Education (CUIBE), and are actively involved in furthering all aspects of undergraduate international business education, to include business language instruction, undergraduate research initiatives, curriculum development, and international/overseas experience through study abroad, field studies, and internships.

20th Annual FDIB-Spanish Workshop (June 14-20, 2009)
An annual workshop designed for Professors of Spanish, hosted by the University of South Carolina CIBER for the 20th straight year. The week-long seminar, conducted on the Columbia, SC campus concurrently with the Annual International Business FDIB Seminars, is designed to provide Spanish-language faculty with the expertise and knowledge to instruct Business Spanish in the world of international business. There is $7K (14 each @ $500) in CIBER Scholarships available for this workshop. To apply, contact Nancy Beym , Registrar.

Language and Culture for International Business: A Workshop for Foreign Language Faculty (February 2009)
An annual workshop sponsored by the University of Memphis CIBER and co-sponsored by the University of South Carolina CIBER designed for Professors of Spanish, French, German, and Japanese. The annual three-day workshop, conducted in Memphis, TN, is supported each year through scholarship funds from the SC CIBER. To apply, contact the Memphis CIBER.

CIBER Business Language Conference (April 2-4, 2009)
An annual business language conference for university, community college and high school faculty, sponsored exclusively by a consortium of all 31 CIBERs, and hosted on a rotating-basis by the CIBERs.
