Biography

Martha Thomas was appointed Director of the Office of Marketing Communications for the Moore School of Business in July 2008, bringing with her a background as both a communications educator and a marketing communications professional.

Thomas moved to her present position from the Moore School’s Center for Business Communication (CBC), a facility for education and research in professional communication that Thomas founded in 1997 and directed until 2008. As director of the CBC, Thomas trained and managed communication consultants in providing individual instruction to Moore School students, faculty, staff, and alumni. She developed a menu of communication workshops on topics such as intercultural communication, writing for the job market, teamwork and small-group communication, and the rhetoric of PowerPoint, and she created a program of English language learning support for international students and faculty. The CBC was one of the first facilities of its kind in business education and has served as a model for other business schools in the United States and abroad.

Prior to her academic career, Thomas was a marketing communications executive in New York City, most recently serving as president of Thomas & Thomas Advertising, an award-winning agency she co-founded, owned, and operated with her husband, a marketing executive. She began her professional career as a copywriter at global firms such as BBD&O, Cunningham & Walsh (now N. W. Ayer), and Grey Advertising. Thomas came to the University of South Carolina to earn an MFA in creative writing, where she studied with playwright John MacNicholas and poet James Dickey. As a graduate student, she was editor of the University’s literary journal, Yemassee, Assistant Director of the First-Year English program, and the winner of multiple departmental awards for teaching, scholarship, and writing. She has published book chapters, reviews, and numerous articles in academic journals such as Business Communication Quarterly, Accounting Horizons, Journal of Business Communication, and Corporate Communications: An International Journal.
